Get Started With These Vocal Exercises (Part 1)

You probably know by now that one of the most effective things you can do for your voice is regular voice exercises. Let me first say that there are two different types of vocal exercises. You’ve heard about vocal warm ups, but that’s usually where most singers stay. The problem there is that your voice will never have the breakthrough that you hope for without doing vocal strengthening exercises.

So, I want to give you a few of those here, but I want to say one more thing first. Your voice, just like the other muscles in your body, responds to stimuli, exercises, at first with a lot of change. But, as you do the exercises, over and over, the law of diminishing returns comes into effect, meaning that the same exercises are not as effective after some time. So, it’s important to switch up your routine every once in a while, monthly is a good goal.

Okay, here is a good vocal warm up exercise to get you started. It’s a great one to do in the morning, when your voice is tired, and you need for it to wake up, without pushing it too hard. It’s a closed-mouth exercise, which I think is the best as a first of a series of morning exercises.

This exercise starts around your middle range and descends. So, with mouth closed, hum “Hmmm”. Do this at a comfortable volume, and do it a few times. When your voice starts to fell a little bit more limber, do it at a higher volume.

    Wow after doing this for a while my head starts to feel weird?? lol but i admit then after words stand up straight and my notes sound a little better :)
