How to sing without straining
Strain means your voice is working harder than it needs to. Fix the setup and the effort drops.
Tips
- If your neck veins pop out, back off. Visible neck tension is a red flag, not a sign of effort.
- Drop your larynx gently — imagine a small yawn at the back of your throat before you sing.
- Don't chase songs in the wrong key. Transpose down until you can sing comfortably, then build up.
- Hydrate before you sing, not during. Room-temperature water an hour ahead beats sipping mid-song.
- Rest after a hard session. Your cords recover overnight — pushing through fatigue causes damage.
When to get a coach.
Vocal health coaches spot strain before you feel it. Worth it if singing ever leaves you hoarse.
