How to sing with a belt
Belting isn't yelling on pitch. It's a coordinated mix of chest resonance and twang that takes time to build safely.
Tips
- Twang first, volume later. That bright, brassy quality comes from narrowing your epiglottis — a coach can show you.
- Keep the larynx stable. A rising larynx on high belt notes is the fastest path to a sore throat.
- Start belt exercises in your speaking range and move up slowly — don't jump to "Defying Gravity" on day one.
- Use speech-level exercises. Speak the lyric powerfully, then sustain it on pitch before adding melody.
- Film yourself. Belt looks different from the inside than it does from the outside.
When to get a coach.
Belting without a coach is how voices break. MT coaches specialize in safe, powerful mix and belt.
